The uncomfortable, uncertain amount of silence in “I Will Always Love You” feels a little like Joseph’s part in Jesus’ birth story—everyone else we’ll read about this season has melodic moments; Joseph gets no song.
The message Joseph receives from God comes in a dream. In his silent night, waiting for the next beat to drop, Joseph must consider the part he’s asked to play and decide: should he say yes Yahweh? In the silence, we’ll consider our own answers as well.
